September 2: From The Netherlands to Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port

From the Netherlands, you can easily reach SJPP by train in one day. I took the Thalys train in Rotterdam at 11:30 and arrived in Paris Nord somewhere around 14:15. Here I took a metro to Paris Montparnasse, and boarded the TGV train to Bayonne.

Please note: you need about an hour to get from Paris Nord to Paris Montparnasse. The metros can be busy and the same goes for the ticket vending machines. To avoid this, you could decide to walk instead. This takes a bit longer, but it will provide some time in the open air on a long train day.

After arriving, in early evening, in Bayonne, I went to eat something and then boarded the train to Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port. This train was fantastic, as it was full of pilgrims. You immediately feel part of the pilgrim community, and of course this feeling got even stronger when I arrived at the albergue, where we were greeted by a very charismatic hospitalero, who spoke to us about the magic of the Camino.
